FCC EXPECTED TO REPEAL NET NEUTRALITY RULES

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai is expected to lead an effort today to repeal the government’s 2015 net neutrality rules, which sought to force Internet providers to treat all online services, large and small, equally.

“The move to deregulate the telecom and cable industry would be a major setback for tech companies, consumer groups and Democrats who lobbied heavily against the decision,” according to The Washington Post. “And it would be a sweeping victory for Republicans who vowed to roll back the efforts of the prior administration, despite a recent survey showing that 83 percent of Americans — including 3 out of 4 Republicans — opposed the plan.”

As Wired reports, however, today’s vote is likely to trigger a series of lawsuits.

HOUSE AND SENATE REPUBLICANS REACH DEAL ON TAX BILL

Congressional Republicans have reached an agreement on a final bill that would cut taxes for businesses and individuals and is the party’s biggest legislative achievement since assuming political control this year.

The New York Times reports, “Party leaders in the House and Senate agreed in principle to bridge the yawning gaps between their competing versions of the $1.5 trillion tax bill, keeping Republican on track for final votes next week with the aim of delivering a bill to President Trump’s desk by Christmas.”

The different versions of the bill had the same core principles — like sharply cutting taxes on businesses while reducing rates and eliminating some breaks for individuals — but differed on details. The final bill will likely resemble the Senate version, but key ideas from each will be included.
