My Roommate Has A New Boyfriend: The Pros & Cons

By Oore Olayinka on December 18, 2017

We’ve all been there at some point. Or will be. You know what I’m talking about. Boy meets girl, they start to hang out together, fall in love, blah blah blah. It’s just a bit different when said girl is your roommate. Cuz now, there’s going to be some changes being made here and there. Here’s a list of things that you’re going to have to learn to get used to, both negative and positive.

1. Con- Getting used to a new face around

It’s okay if you and your roommate don’t see each other all that much. Chances are, you won’t see her boyfriend all that much either. But if you happen to be really close to your roommate (or in my case, you happen to be best friends with your roommate) you’ll see her boyfriend all the time. Things that used to be you and her become you, her and him. And then you can’t walk around the apartment in your skimpy outfits anymore because you know, he might be around. It gets pretty annoying sometimes.

2. Pro- He’s like your personal handyman

Especially if he’s one of those “macho-men.” He will help you fix everything in the apartment. From broken taps and leaks to burned-out lightbulbs, to random broken fuses, he’s your guy. He will also help you lift heavy stuff which is pretty cool.

3. Con- He eats your food

He’s always around which means he’s eating out of your refrigerator too. Sometimes you get that text in class that says “Hey, do you mind if I eat the wings you left in the refrigerator?” And even though you don’t really want to share, you end up doing so just so you don’t look like the bad guy. And sometimes, you just come home from class to find out that the extra cheesy cheeseburger you’ve been dreaming about in Biology is gone. So freaking annoying!

4. Pro- He also helps with groceries

He will feel bad about eating your food so often that he’ll soon begin to help out with groceries too. Soon, he’ll start replacing stuff like milk, eggs, bread and yogurt and you’ll be grateful. That doesn’t mean he’s forgiven for that cheeseburger he ate. I mean you really had been thinking about eating it all through that extremely long and boring Bio class.

5. Con- Extra messes

If you’re me, the one more concerned with cleanliness and order, there’s a big problem. Now there’s more of you, there’s also more dirt and more chores piling up. There are more dishes to wash up now. There’s more trash piling up in the bin. There’s one more person not outing things back where they belong.

6. Pro- An extra hand

Okay, sure there are more messes, but there’s also more hands now. Sometimes, he earns points for being thoughtful and helpful. Like that time he helped you wash dishes without you asking him to. Or that time you forgot to take out the trash and he helped you with it. Or that time he went overboard and cleaned out the cooker. Like wow. So yeah, he’s actually pretty helpful too.

7. Pro- Your own chauffeur.

He earns bonus points for driving you places sometimes. Like when you’re late to class and he offers to drive you. Or when he shows up to pick you up that class that ends at 9 p.m. Then you’re grateful that he’s around because you don’t have a car and that would have been a very long walk.

Now that we’ve gone through that list, you realize that maybe he’s not all that bad, huh? Okay, so maybe the only really annoying thing about him is that you have to share your best friend with him now. But hey, if she’s happy, you’re happy! Right?
